August Producer Price Rise Disappoints, Despite Gasoline, Consumer Loan Cost Surge

September 13, 2017 Tyler Durden 0

Despite significant acceleration year-over-year – thanks to a 9.5% surge in gasoline costs – producer price appreciation in August disappointed expectations. PPI Final Demand YoY accelerated from 1.9% to 2.4% (but fell below the 2.5% expectation), rising only 0.2% MoM.

The corest of the core PPI remained below The Fed’s mandated inflation target for the second straight month…

But headline PPI jumped to 2.4% YoY… perhaps putting more pressure on The Fed…

Prices for final demand goods advanced 0.5 percent in August, the largest rise since moving up 0.5 percent in April. Most of the August increase can be traced to the index for final demand energy, which climbed 3.3 percent. Prices for final demand goods less foods and energy moved up 0.2 percent.

In contrast, the index for final demand foods fell 1.3 percent.

Three-quarters of the August increase in the final demand goods index can be traced to prices for gasoline, which jumped 9.5 percent .

Over half of the August increase in the index for final demand services can be attributed to prices for consumer loans (partial), which advanced 1.7 percent

This is the highest level of consumer loan price index since Nov 2015…

In other words, as inflation rises, the cost of taking out a loan to maintain your standard of living is also increasing…

Top Israel court strikes down military service exemptions for ultra-Orthodox

September 13, 2017 Middle East Monitor 0

Israel’s Supreme Court yesterday ruled against legislation that exempts Jewish seminary students from military service, reopening a sensitive issue that could destabilise the country’s ruling coalition. A panel of nine justices ruled that parts of the conscription law that exempt seminary students from service were “unreasonable and unconstitutional”, Reuters reported. The court gave the government a year to resolve the matter. “The history of this societal controversy reflects the history of the State of Israel itself,” wrote the departing President of the Supreme Court, Justice Miriam Naor, in the 148-page ruling. Turkey inks deal to purchase Russian S-400 air defence systems

September 13, 2017 Middle East Monitor 0

Turkey has signed a deal to purchase the S-400 air defence system from Russia, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was reported as saying. “A deposit has also been paid as far as I know,” Erdogan told reporters upon his arrival from Kazakhstan on Sunday, Turkey’s Hurriyet newspaper reported. “I and Mr. Putin are determined on this issue,” he added. A military adviser to Russian President, Vladimir Putin, Vladimir Kozhin, said the S-400 contract with Turkey was “strictly compatible with our strategic interests”. “On that score, one can quite understand the reaction of some Western countries who are trying to put pressure on Turkey,” he added. Last month, the Pentagon expressed concern about Turkey’s intention to purchase the system.
